St. Patrick’s Day is widely recognized by its trademark vibrant green hue and celebratory events. Historically a sacred day, its initial purpose was to commemorate the life of Saint Patrick—a patron saint of Ireland who was responsible for introducing Christianity to the Irish people.
Legend has it that St. Patrick passed away in the fifth century, on March 17th, 461. However, it wasn’t until roughly the 9th or 10th century when the Irish began to observe the Roman Catholic Feast Day of St. Patrick on March 17th. Soon after on March 17th, 1772, Irish soldiers, who were homesick due to serving in the English military, marched in honor of their beloved patron Saint Patrick in the streets of New York.
Ironically, the United States held the first ever commemoration in honor of Ireland’s St. Patrick. It wasn’t long before neighboring cities followed suit, and the St. Patrick’s Day tradition evolved from then on. Today, many different people, Irish or not, celebrate the holiday.
