Breathable Summer Fabrics
No matter where you live, chances are there is a period during the summer when temperatures skyrocket and it is scorching hot outside. Although some people enjoy the heat more than others, everyone could use some apparel that makes the heat a little more bearable. Wondering what you should wear to stay cool? Here are the best fabrics for the summer heat.
What is it? Polyester is a shortened name for a synthetic, man-made polymer. Polyester is made by mixing ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. That may sound complicated and scientific, but basically, it is a kind of plastic. The material is made up of these man-made fibers. Polyester is a popular choice for many fashion brands and for athletic apparel.
Additional characteristics of polyester include:
- Durable and resistant to various chemicals
- Resistant to shrinking, stretching, wrinkling, and abrasions
- Made with very strong fibers, yet lightweight
- Retains its shape well
- Easy to wash and quick-drying
- Slippery and almost silky to the touch
Polyester Is a Moisture-Wicking Fabric
If you are going to be doing any sort of activity where you’ll break a sweat, moisture-wicking fabric is the way to go. Polyester is so popular for activewear because it wicks moisture, and it is a synthetic fabric, meaning it resists water penetration. Once you reach a comfortable body temperature, your body will stop sweating.
What is it? Rayon is a fabric made from regenerated cellulose. Unlike many man-made fibers, rayon is not synthetic. You’ll find different plant-based fabrics under names that include rayon. Although it doesn’t wick away moisture as well as polyester does and wrinkles more easily, rayon offers breathability, drapes nicely, dries easily, and has a silky feel.
What is it? Cotton is a natural fiber that comes from the seedpod of cotton plants. It is the most popular fabric in the world and is used for many fabric types. Depending on the weave, cotton fiber can be used for denim, khaki, and more.
Additional characteristics of cotton include:
- Easy to clean and launder
- “Breathes” in hot and humid weather
- Absorbs up to 27 times its own weight in water
- Comfortable and soft
- Takes dye easily
- Durable and strong
- Easy to handle and sew
On the downside, cotton does absorb moisture rather than wicking away moisture. Cotton probably isn’t the best choice if you are going to be sweating, but it is comfortable, breathable, and easy to care for.
