Stephen was the youngest of seven children. At age eight, Stephen lost his father, and a year and a half later, his mother passed away, leaving him an orphan to be raised by older siblings. Due to the values instilled in him at a young age and the way his siblings raised him, Stephen grew up to be an extraordinary individual and a dedicated firefighter.
Tunnel to Towers Foundation is the legacy of firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller who lost his life-saving others during the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001, Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel after hearing about the attacks. The tunnel had been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 pounds of gear to his back and raced through the tunnel to the Twin Towers where he ultimately lost his life. Stephen’s story is a reminder to all of us to live life to the fullest and spend our time here on earth doing good.
Tunnels to Towers 5K Run & Walk
Every year on the last Sunday of September, Tunnel to Towers holds a 5K run and walk in New York City to honor the life of Stephen Siller. The event symbolizes Siller’s final footsteps from the foot of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel (formerly known as the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel) to the Twin Towers site and pays homage to the 343 FDNY firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and thousands of civilians who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Every year, more than 25,000 participants and volunteers take to the streets to support the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk. Proceeds from the event held in New York City support the foundation’s programs, including those benefiting first responders, as well as injured service members. The Tunnel to Tower Foundation puts on about 50 events throughout the year in cities around the country.
Overall, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation aims to honor 9/11 by helping our nation’s first responders and service members, both heroes who risk their lives for us every day. The organization does this through events, donations, and other various events that honor these heroes and raise money for the families who have lost someone to these tragic events.
